Final drive maintenance: intervals and checklist

Check the oil level in the final drive once a month and change the gear oil every 250 to 500 operating hours, at least once a year. Add visual checks for leaks, a correctly tensioned track and a clean undercarriage.
Final drives work in tough conditions: mud, water, stones and changing loads. A few regular checks prevent most expensive damage. Always follow the machine manufacturer's instructions first. Our notes are general and cannot cover every application.

Oil change checklist
- Drain the gear oil warm, it flows out more easily.
- Inspect the old oil carefully for metal particles.
- Fill the gearbox with new oil, 80W90 is recommended. The usual fill is up to the level port, on many drives about half full.
- Do not mix different oil types.
- Check the hydraulic system for leaks.
- Check track tension. An over-tensioned track loads the hub bearings and can lead to premature gearbox failure.

Warning signs that cannot wait
- Oil in the gap between housing and sprocket: final drive leaking
- Excavator pulls to one side or cannot climb a slope: final drive has no power
- Grinding noises or chips in the oil: repair or replace?
- Gearbox oil level rising: hydraulic oil is entering from the travel motor, check the case drain line.
