Final drive: repair or replace?
A repair pays off when only the seals leak and motor and gearbox still run smoothly. If there are metal chips in the oil, the gearbox rattles or the drive has many operating hours behind it, a new final drive is usually cheaper, because follow-up damage and long downtime add up.
A failed final drive stops the excavator. The first question is almost always: repair it or fit a new drive? The answer depends less on the price of the new part than on the type of damage, the age of the drive and how long the machine can be out of action.
Damage that can be repaired
Damage that only affects the sealing and has not caused follow-up damage is easy to repair:
- Leaking floating seal (duo-cone seal between housing and hub), as long as the gearbox still had enough oil.
- Leaking ports or plugs: replace O-rings and sealing washers, often without removing the drive.
- Single valves in the travel motor, for example a sticking two-speed valve.
When a new final drive is the better choice
It gets expensive once the damage has reached the inside. Then bearings, planetary gears, pistons or the valve plate need replacing, and parts for older drives are often hard to get.
- Metal chips or debris in the gear oil: bearings or gears are already damaged.
- Grinding or rattling noises while travelling that get worse under load.
- Gearbox ran dry because a leak went unnoticed for too long.
- Travel motor without power, although pump and controls are fine (worn pistons and running surfaces).
- High operating hours: after a partial repair, the next wear parts often fail.
Repair and new part compared
| Repair | New final drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable for | Seals, single valves, young drives | Bearing, gearbox and motor damage, old drives |
| Process | Removal, shipping, inspection, sourcing parts, return | Order, receive, swap |
| Machine downtime | Depends on findings and parts, often several weeks | Stock items usually ship within 1 to 2 working days |
| Predictable cost? | Only after inspection | Yes, fixed price in the quote |
| Remaining risk | Parts not replaced remain worn | All parts new |
Checklist: decide in five steps
- Check the oil. Drain some gear oil. Clear oil points to a seal problem only. Chips, glitter or milky oil indicate internal damage or water ingress.
- Check noise and power. Does the machine track straight and with full power? If not, read final drive has no power first, because the cause can also lie before the drive.
- Estimate age and hours. The older the drive, the more a complete replacement pays off.
- Assess downtime. What does one day of standstill cost? For rental machines and running sites this often decides.
- Get a quote for a new part. With model and part number from the type plate you usually get our quote within 12 hours. Then you can compare both options honestly.
What to check on a new final drive
A replacement drive must match the old one in three points: bolt pattern on the frame and sprocket, number of hydraulic lines and number of speeds. Every model page in our catalogue by brand shows these data. We check which drive fits your machine before every quote.
Our final drives are brand new and supplied complete with travel motor and planetary gearbox. The swap is described in removing and installing a final drive.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a mini excavator final drive?
Only for pure seal damage without follow-up damage. If bearings, gearbox or motor are worn, a new final drive is usually more economical, because inspection, parts and downtime add up.
How do I recognise internal damage?
By metal chips in the gear oil, grinding noises while travelling and loss of power on one side although pump and controls are fine.
How fast can I get a new final drive?
Most drives are in stock. By freight forwarder they usually arrive within 1 to 2 working days in Germany, other EU countries a few days later.
Can I replace the final drive myself?
To avoid fitting errors, we recommend having the drive installed by a specialist workshop. If a fitting error occurs, the warranty is void. Connecting the hydraulic lines correctly is key, especially the case drain line.
